Do I Need Music Licences for YouTube Videos in Australia?
Do I Need Music Licences for YouTube Videos in Australia?
Music LicensingBuying music does not give you YouTube synchronisation rights. You need a licence that covers the actual use, including commercial posting, monetisation potential and Content ID matching.
Attribution is not permission
A credit line may be ethically appropriate, but it does not substitute for the owner’s permission. Many creators discover this when a copyright claim appears on a video that credited every musician in the description.
Buying is not licensing
Buying access to music, imagery or video does not necessarily provide synchronisation rights, monetised YouTube rights, Content ID clearance, global use, perpetual use or the right to use the asset for a client. Each use right must be granted separately.
What licences do you actually need?
| Right | Why it matters for YouTube |
|---|---|
| Synchronization rights | Combining music with moving images in your video |
| Commercial use rights | Posting and monetising on a commercial platform |
| Content ID clearance | Avoiding automated claims from rights holders |
| Global distribution | Reaching viewers outside Australia |
| Perpetual or extended term | Avoiding licence expiry after publication |
Where to get music that is safe for YouTube
- YouTube Audio Library: Free tracks provided by YouTube, but check each track’s specific terms.
- Commercial stock libraries: Paid services that grant YouTube-compatible licences. Verify the licence terms cover commercial use and monetisation.
- Direct from rights holders: Artists or publishers who grant explicit written permission.
- Composer-produced content: Original music where the creator owns all rights and grants you a licence.
The cost of getting it wrong
A copyright claim can redirect or hold revenue. Repeated claims can escalate to a copyright removal request and strike. The cost of replacing a music track is usually far lower than the cost of a sponsor dispute or channel strike.
