The Federal Court’s Apple remedies decision concerns competition in iOS app distribution and payments for digital content.
Its practical effect depends on the particular obligation, the covered account and any subsequent court orders.1
Distribution and payment choices
The orders address alternative marketplaces, direct downloads, necessary developer tools and alternatives to Apple’s in-app purchase system.
They also restrict specified commercial conditions and retaliation against developers using the protected alternatives.
This does not guarantee that every developer will offer every distribution or payment option.
Security remains relevant
Alternative distribution is subject to the specified automated security or privacy scan and technical notarisation arrangements.
The orders do not require Apple to ignore malware or all harmful content. They also do not order Apple to host every rival marketplace inside Apple’s own App Store.1
Different commencement arrangements
The principal changes are scheduled for noon Melbourne time on 1 March 2027.
Apple can apply within the specified February window for an extension to 3 May 2027. An extension is not automatic: Apple must file and serve a supported application within the window, and the Court decides whether to grant it.
The separate Epic-app readmission requirement is not subject to the same postponement. Always check for later stays or variations.1
